Student Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to receive need-based Federal assistance, a student must:
- Be enrolled in an eligible program of study.
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident or reside in the United States for other than a temporary purpose. (supportive documentation may be required to verify residency or citizenship status)
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress in their course of study.
- Not be in default of any loan or owe a repayment on a Federal Pell Grant, FSEOG, or State Grant.

Step 1: Submit the 2023-2024 FAFSA
You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year in order to be considered for federal financial aid, including student loans. You can submit the application online at fafsa.gov or through the myStudentAid mobile app. You must list our school code (008067) in order for the Student Financial Aid Office to import your FAFSA information and determine your financial aid eligibility for federal grants and loans.
Step 2: Apply for Student Loans
Completing the FAFSA is the first step in applying for student loans. To receive a student loan, you must also complete a Master Promissory Note and the Entrance Loan Counseling requirements for Stafford loans. You must complete similar documents for a Graduate Plus Loan. Unlike the FAFSA, the Master Promissory Notes and Entrance Loan Counseling Sessions are not year-specific and can be completed only once during enrollment. You can access the loan promissory notes and counseling information at StudentLoans.gov.
Step 3: I submitted my FAFSA, Now what?
You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the U.S. Department of Education. Review this document to make certain the information is accurate. The Student Financial Aid Office will receive the same information if you listed our school code (008067) on your FAFSA. You must be accepted into an academic program at LSU Health Shreveport before the financial aid office can import your information into our system. The Financial Aid Office imports FAFSA data every Monday.
Step 4: Check your status
Financial aid staff will review your FAFSA information for accuracy. Sometimes, you must provide documentation to verify information reported on your FAFSA. You will receive a notification from the Student Financial Aid Office informing you that additional information is needed. The notice will also instruct you to check your To-Do list in the Student Self-Service portal. You must activate your LSU Health Shreveport email account and password before you can access the Self-Service Portal.
Step 5: Verification of Admission and Academic Requirements
The Student Financial Aid Office must verify that students have met academic requirements before a student receives a formal financial aid award. The Student Financial Aid Office will check the admission status to make certain new students have met all requirements for full acceptance into LSU Health Shreveport. For continuing students, the financial aid office must verify that students successfully completed prior semesters of enrollment (See Satisfactory Academic Progress policy). Students returning after sitting out a semester must be cleared through the Registrar’s Office before the financial aid office can determine eligibility. Any incomplete requirements in the Admissions, Registrar, and Student Financial Aid Offices can delay your financial aid award notification.
Step 6: Receive your Award Notification
You will receive your Financial Aid Notification (FAN) through the PeopleSoft Self-Service Portal. Students with an incomplete admission status will receive a Provisional financial aid award which gives the student estimated amounts. Once the student’s admission status is changed to “Clear” in PeopleSoft, the Student Financial Aid Office will change the provisional award to an actual award. Students with an Admission Status of “Clear” will receive a FAN for formal financial aid offers and provide the student with the opportunity to accept, decline, and reduce award amounts. FANs are sent on an ongoing basis, beginning in the spring for the next school year. Students can download a PDF version of their FAN notification to give to external agencies for verification of awards. Watch your email and check the Self-Service Portal to review your status.
