Knowledge impacts positive outcomes. In the years leading up to college, students are doing a lot to prepare themselves to become competitive applicants for LSU Health Shreveport’s School of Medicine, School of Health Professions and Sciences, and School of Graduate Studies.

Between choosing the right classes, building strong study habits and figuring out the next steps, the process can feel overwhelming. The Office for Student and Community Engagement (OSCE) exists to help make that process clearer for both students and their families. When families have the right information, they feel more confident and better equipped to support students as they prepare for college and explore careers in healthcare.

That’s the goal of the OSC E half-day College and Healthcare Career Readiness Bootcamp.

“Students in the Shreveport/Bossier communities come from many different backgrounds, and not all have access to the same resources or opportunities,” said Dr. Toni Thibeaux, EdD, MPH, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student and Community Engagement. “Participating in the Bootcamp sets students and families up for success because each session will detail transactional strategies to improve standardized test scores and classroom performance.”

Dr. Thibeaux also emphasized how important family involvement is throughout a student's academic journey. “Parents need to hear and recognize the importance of being actively involved in their children’s learning,” she said. When families stay engaged, students are more motivated to succeed. That leads to higher graduation rates across Louisiana and helps strengthen the healthcare workforce.

Family support can make a real difference. By attending the Bootcamp together, families leave feeling informed, confident and better prepared to support their student every step of the way.
