It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Jay Marion, MD on March 13, 2024. His calm, insightful and compassionate demeanor endeared him to students, patients, and families alike throughout his distinguished career.

LSU Health Shreveport is home to the only medical school in north Louisiana and one of only three in the state. Medical students interact with patients from their very first semester and learn from a combination of lectures, small groups, standardized patient exercises and clinical skills throughout their training.

The third annual department of Medicine Research Day features research being conducted by our residents in oral presentations and on posters. This year included five oral presenters and thirty posters.
Dr. John Mercke, LSUHS Resident in the Family Medicine Residency Program in Alexandria is the recipient of the 2021 Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians “Resident Award of Excellence”. Only one resident is chosen statewide for the annual award.
Founded in 1902, Alpha Omega Alpha is a national medical honor society comprised of over 4,000 students, residents/fellows, faculty and alumni. Leadership of the Louisiana Gamma chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society announced student selections from the Class of 2022.
Named in honor of Dr. Butler, the first woman chair of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in the United States, this award recognizes individuals with significant impact and measurable outcomes in the mentorship of women in head and neck surgery. Dr. Nathan has had a great impact on the careers and lives of countless individuals in this specialty.
“Our medical school did incredibly well in the Match with 98% of our 115 students matching. These results are significantly better than many medical schools across the nation which reflects the commitment by our faculty to help each student achieve their personal best,” said Dr. David Lewis, dean of the School of Medicine at LSU Health Shreveport.
Bossier Press - The first GammaTile® Therapy medical device to treat malignant brain tumors was implanted during a neurosurgery procedure by Christina Notarianni, MD, and William Christopher Newman, MD, neurosurgeons, in collaboration with Willis-Knighton Cancer Center’s Jake Wang, MD, radiation oncologist, and Terry Wu, PhD, medical physicist.

Some doctors from LSUHS have made the long haul to the front lines of the COVID-19 fight in Louisiana: New Orleans. Guided by Dr. Angela Cornelius, the seven residents come from various specialties but have the same mission: providing much needed aid to an overwhelmed hospital.

The Department of Urology welcomed Dr. David A. Ginsberg, Professor of Clinical Urology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and Chief of Urology at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, as their inaugural Robert K. Womack Visiting Professor.
In an article for the Washington Post, John Vanchiere, vice chairman for pediatric research at Louisiana State University Health Shreveport, said his team evaluates two to four babies per month for congenital syphilis.
