"It is truly a great honor to have been appointed as Assistant Dean of Diversity Affairs at LSU Health Shreveport. As a graduate from this institution, my workplace since my graduation 2010 to date, I am extremely proud to head this all-new diversity unit and, more precisely, to oversee institution-wide diversity and inclusion. Consequently, my vision is to create an inclusive work and campus environment, where all stakeholders will definitely enjoy living and working, regardless of culture, race, religion, or ethnicity.
To concretize this vision, I will consider to provide strong leadership including senior leadership from groups traditionally underrepresented in Medicine; to promote diversity training and education for diverse groups of students, residents, or staff members; to create a supportive support culture, including: mentoring, recruiting, retention and advancement of students; to assess and evaluate our diversity programs for necessary follow up.
The application of these key strategies will give way to crafting institution-wide diversity and inclusion programs, outreach and synergy activities that will enrich the overall student’s learning experience on campus and the all-embracing stakeholders’ productivity.
I look forward to teaming up with Dr. G. E. Ghali, Chancellor; Dr. Jane M. Eggerstedt, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Ms. Toni Thibeaux, Director of Diversity Affairs; Dr Scott Kennedy, Assistant Dean of Student Admissions; our house-staff and faculty, in an ultimate effort to provide LSU Health Shreveport with the most effective diversity program in response to an increasingly diverse workforce."
As part of a strategy to recruit more students from priority populations, the Offices of Diversity and Academic Affairs at the School of Medicine, School of Allied Health, and the School of Graduate Studies partner to host HBCU Day. This 8-hour workshop creats an opportunity for our administrators, faculty, and staff to engage with students who are enrolled at a 4-year HBCU in Louisiana and discuss the pathway to become a medical doctor, allied health professional or researcher. Some topics include our medical curriculum, learning environment, admissions process, financial aid, student groups, summer research, mentoring programs, campus culture and climate, and student experiences.
Since 1993, LSU Health Shreveport has taken an active role to improve the science and math background of disadvantaged students by soliciting federal and institutional funds to sponsor summer enrichment programs. To demonstrate its commitment to improve the quality of education for pre-college and college students, LSU Health Shreveport has forged partnership linkages with the Caddo and Bossier Parish School Districts, and the twenty-six colleges/ universities in Louisiana. Each partner in the pipeline provides one or more of the necessary components: students, space, structured enrichment programming, research activities, and funds to ensure that the partnership linkages succeed.

At the start of the academic school year, medical students, faculty, staff, residents, and fellows are invited to attend the annual Meet and Greet. The intended targeted population are minority students. However, all students are invited as a way to demonstrate the medical school’s effort towards embracing diversity and inclusion. The purpose of this event is to provide a space outside of the traditional classroom setting for students to engage with prospective mentors, advisors, and peer-to-peer tutors. The expected outcome of the annual event is for students to build and foster positive relationships, and to feel they are a part of the LSU Health Shreveport medical and teaching communities. Creating a sense of belonging could enhance student learning.
