Visiting Medical Students
Students who have already earned the equivalent of the MD degree at the time of application or by the time of the start date of the elective are not eligible to apply. Please review our observership policy if you are interested in this opportunity.
We participate in the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) for LCME-accredited institutions.

LSU Health Shreveport welcomes qualified international visiting medical students into the senior elective program. Students who are in their final year of medical school are eligible to apply. Applicants must be in good academic standing at their home school, have completed the required core clerkships, must have their school's approval to participate in the desired elective and must have health and liability insurance coverage.
All electives courses at LSU Health Shreveport are part of the official curriculum of the School of Medicine. Qualified visiting students may be accommodated in elective spots that have not been filled by our students. Elective rotation dates must coincide with the scheduled dates of LSU Health Shreveport elective periods.

Block dates are identified in the application packet. We will begin accepting applications for blocks 7-11 postmarked August 1, 2019 and after. We will begin processing applications for blocks 7-11 beginning September 3, 2019. If an application for blocks 7-11 is postmarked prior to August 1st, IT WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Please read the information carefully.
Please do NOT directly contact LSU Health Shreveport faculty or administrative staff in an attempt to arrange clinical/research experiences. The Office of the Registrar is responsible for processing and scheduling ALL elective requests for visiting students. All students must follow established guidelines and procedures (no exceptions).

- Photograph – Must be in color, must not exceed 2 x 2-inches in size.
- Curriculum Vitae
- Documented proof of passing USMLE Step 1 score; this is mandatory no exceptions!
- Official transcript from medical school, in sealed envelope.
- International students only: TOEFL/IELTS: A copy of score report for TOEFL or IELTS or official letter from Dean confirming English language proficiency
- US Money Order for $300 for the non-refundable application fee
We will only accept our current application available on this web page. If you submit a prior year's visiting student application or immunization form, your application will not be processed.
Elective offerings are included in the Visiting Student manual. Please review each course to verify if you can apply for that departmental elective based on USMLE Step 1 requirements. Some departments post a minimum score in order to be considered. LSU Health Shreveport will not accommodate medical students who entered medical school in 2012 or earlier.
We do not charge tuition for visiting medical students. However, for international and Caribbean medical students, A NON-REFUNDABLE application fee of $300 is required. We accept payment by cashier’s check, bank check, or money order in U.S. currency only. We DO NOT accept personal checks, wire transfers, credit cards, or cash. Please make payable to LSU Health Shreveport and reference the visiting student’s name on the payment. Full payment must be received with the completed application.
Application Processing Timeline
Applications will be processed beginning September 3, 2019 for blocks 7-11.
Selection is based on medical school transcript grades, USMLE Step 1 score, space availability and competitiveness. Applications will be processed in the order received, HOWEVER THE DEPARTMENTS DECIDE WHICH CANDIDATES WILL BE OFFERED ELECTIVES. IT IS A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE PROCESS.
If Accepted, Students Must Submit All required documents within 2 weeks of accepting offer.
- International Students must provide proof of valid visa status (must be up to date).
- Documented Proof of personal health insurance (copy of insurance card with coverage dates is accepted).
- Documented Proof of Professional Liability Insurance ($1,000,000 per claim/$3,000,000 aggregate)
All required documents must be received within 2 weeks of accepting offer or the elective will be cancelled.
Notification of approval or denial
All components of the application should be mailed in one package. Applications may be denied if all component parts have not been received. Students will be notified of approval or denial minimum of 4 weeks prior to the start date of the requested elective.
In the event of cancellation, please immediately notify the Registrar’s Office at least one month advance notice.
