More than 500 clinical and research faculty members are key to our mission of healing, teaching and discovery. Their dedication enables our students to receive a strong foundation in basic sciences, anatomy and clinical practice. Our faculty includes nationally and internationally known clinicians and researchers. Many have been recruited from major institutions around the country. Others chose to stay on our campus after graduation to teach the next generation of scientists and healthcare providers. Along with the support of our students, faculty members have a strong commitment to the communities in our region and participate in a variety of cultural, academic, athletic, philanthropic and religious activities that enhance the quality of life in the area.
Endowed Chairs and Professorships
The highest honor bestowed on our faculty is an appointment to an endowed chair or professorship. Endowed positions recognize exemplary clinicians, educators and researchers. The funding is managed by the LSUHS Foundation. Some professorships are intended to honor expertise within a broad field of study, whereas others have a more specific focus.

A History of Healing
Our roots date back to 1876, when a Charity Hospital was established in Shreveport. After much perseverance by north Louisiana lawmakers, physicians and community supporters, the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport was officially authorized by the Louisiana Legislature in 1965. On October 1, 2013, after more than 150 years, the hospitals in Shreveport and Monroe transitioned from public to private entities.
