About the LSUHS Food Pantry

Welcome to the LSUHS Food Pantry!! The Food Pantry has been established to alleviate food insecurities among students. We provide supplemental food items for food-insecure LSUHS students. According to national research, it is estimated that almost half of college students across the nation have faced food insecurity. This can be positively impacted increased education, access to resources and a supportive community. The LSUHS Food Pantry serves as a year-round resource for students to receive nutritional assistance. Our goal is to provide food to LSUHS students facing food insecurity so they are better able to focus on studies, family, work and personal growth.  In an effort to serve as many students as possible, we may post guidelines as to the number of items in various categories that a student can take.

What is food insecurity?

If you are reading this manual, you may already be aware that food insecurity exists in many places among many different people. You may also know that food banks and food pantries are parts of the food system, which provides short-term food relief for those experiencing food insecurity. A food pantry is a place that distributes emergency food directly to people; it is distinct from a food bank, which is a larger facility that distributes food to pantries. If you are reading this manual you may also know that among those who experience food insecurity there are low-income college students. Unfortunately, there are many who are unaware of this fact and others who do not accept the reality of it.

Food insecurity is recognized as a problem in rural populations, among the elderly, minorities and in single-parent households, especially those headed by women. And yet despite literature on low income college students and college student diets broadly, very little literature on food insecurity of college students exists; there is even less literature on what to do about it. This is why we are here, to increase awareness of food insecurity among low-income college students and to provide information on one strategy, the campus food pantry, for addressing it.
