In the Department of Ophthalmology, clinical resident education is the highest priority. Our faculty members work closely with the residents and share with them their clinical experience and knowledge. With the heavy patient load we handle, the faculty believes that the best care occurs when every single resident is as knowledgeable and competent as possible. The residents are encouraged to research the literature for additional information as part of their patient management and education. To assist in this effort, the department maintains a library with classic and current ophthalmic literature in the General Eye Clinic. The department also supports the residents' participation in the Home Study Course sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition to the help from the faculty, our residents learn from their peers. It has been the tradition of this program for over twenty years that senior residents are mentors to their junior counterparts. In many ways, the department is like a family to our residents and staff members.

Residents in their first and second years split being on primary call on weekdays and weekends with a third year serving as the back-up call throughout the year. This allows the call burden to be split by residents allowing for a q8 weekday and q8 weekend primary call schedule. Backup call is taken a week at a time and is q3. Primary call for holidays and extended weekends are also split by first and second year residents.

Formal education is conducted on most weekday mornings at 7:30 before clinic duties start. Lectures on neuro-ophthalmology, retina, cornea and external disease, oculoplastics, ophthalmic pathology, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, and radiology are given by our faculty members. In addition, fluorescein angiography conferences and journal clubs are held at bi-weekly or monthly intervals. Residents at all levels of training are responsible for organizing clinical grand rounds that take place on Monday of each week.
