In the Department of Ophthalmology, clinical resident education is the highest priority. Our faculty members work closely with the residents and share with them their clinical experience and knowledge. With the heavy patient load we handle, the faculty believes that the best care occurs when every single resident is as knowledgeable and competent as possible. The residents are encouraged to research the literature for additional information as part of their patient management and education. To assist in this effort, the department maintains a library with classic and current ophthalmic literature in the General Eye Clinic. The department also supports the residents' participation in the Home Study Course sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition to the help from the faculty, our residents learn from their peers. It has been the tradition of this program for over twenty years that senior residents are mentors to their junior counterparts. In many ways, the department is like a family to our residents and staff members.

In addition to the help from the faculty, our residents learn from their peers. It has been the tradition of this program for over twenty years that senior residents are mentors to their junior counterparts. In many ways, the department is like a family to our residents and staff members.

Residents in their first and second years split being on primary call on weekdays and weekends with a third year serving as the back-up call throughout the year. This allows the call burden to be split by residents allowing for a q8 weekday and q8 weekend primary call schedule. Backup call is taken a week at a time and is q3. Primary call for holidays and extended weekends are also split by first and second year residents.

Didactic Lectures

Our department seeks to provide our residents with a diversified education. To this end, well-known scholars and surgeons in Ophthalmology are invited as visiting professors to give didactic lectures to department members and other community ophthalmologists.

Formal education is conducted on most weekday mornings at 7:30 before clinic duties start. Lectures on neuro-ophthalmology, retina, cornea and external disease, oculoplastics, ophthalmic pathology, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, and radiology are given by our faculty members. In addition, fluorescein angiography conferences and journal clubs are held at bi-weekly or monthly intervals. Residents at all levels of training are responsible for organizing clinical grand rounds that take place on Monday of each week.

Surgical Training

Surgical training is always emphasized in our department. At LSU Health Shreveport, we handle one of the largest surgical loads in the country, and residents participate in essentially all cases. We believe that proper technical training, extensive experience, and the residents' own dedication are factors that produce competent surgeons. Our diverse surgical cases are certainly an intricate part of each resident's education. While surgical training is primarily performed in the operating room and on a one-to-one basis, the department offers a practical training session on cataract surgery in the wet lab at the Alcon facility in Fort Worth, TX.

Ophthalmology Review Course

The department sends second year residents to the Ophthalmology Review Course in San Antonio, TX for 5 days in the spring before OKAP examination. This leave provides our residents a chance to review the knowledge they have gained throughout the year. It also provides an opportunity for them to be exposed to other great teachers of ophthalmology outside our institution.

Research

Research is an essential component of residency training. Residents work with faculty on their interested research projects to present their findings at the annual “Alumni Day”.  Publication and presentation at major meetings such as the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meetings are encouraged.
