Director's Message

On behalf of the Department of Family Medicine and our Family Medicine Residency Training Programs at LSU Health Shreveport, I want to personally welcome you to the Department. Ours is a university based program that incorporates community affiliated training. Our goal is to give young physicians every real-life opportunity to learn the practice of family medicine and to equip them with the knowledge and skills to provide excellent and compassionate care in the various medical settings of today. We strive to help each resident grow both professionally and personally during their years of training, as well as enable them to become life-long learners. Our residents enjoy the benefits of a caring, expert faculty; a high quality of life; a low cost of living; and a creative and dynamic curriculum.

We have outstanding faculty, whose varied interests allow residents to participate in several areas of special interest, including geriatrics, sports medicine, rural medicine, office-based research, electronic medical informatics, behavioral medicine, pharmacokinetics, health promotion, faculty development, and advanced procedural skills development. Our training in procedures includes EGD, colonoscopy, colposcopy, LEEP, skin biopsy, shave excisions, lesion removal, minor flaps and plastics, exercise stress testing, circumcision, and more. We boast several nationally known family medicine teachers on our faculty and our graduates practice in every type of setting. 

We have a strong and well-established core residency program that utilizes the latest information and teaching techniques in family medicine. We also have diversified by adding a rural residency track that utilizes the home residency for the intern year and then immerses the residents in the rural environment at a strong, progressive, rural hospital in Vivian Louisiana. Our most recent advance is the development of an emergency medicine/family medicine track, only the second one in the country! This unique training leads to dual board certification for those residents who satisfactorily complete the program.

Choosing a residency program is one of the most important decisions of your medical career. Your future residency will be your home for the next 3 to 5 years. As such, it should be a place that can foster personal and professional growth, as well as a place you can grow. We pride ourselves on our strong resident corps and the frequent professional and personal interactions of our faculty and residents. Our residents are happy and feel they are a part of our family.
