The Louisiana Legislature officially authorized the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport in 1965, and the inaugural class of medical students started training in 1969. For over four decades, the Division of Nephrology at LSU Health Shreveport has provided comprehensive care for patients with kidney disease to a vast north and central Louisiana population. Being partnered with Ochsner Health System, one of the largest health care centers in the country, offers a partnership that helps us achieve our institution's goals of educating the physicians of tomorrow, improving the lives of our patients, and advancing research.

Education and Training

Dedicated faculty with a passion for understanding each trainee's unique strengths and goals helps us provide comprehensive fellowship training recognized across the United States and worldwide. Fellows learn to manage a variety of renal disorders in the hospital and ambulatory setting and become adept at performing kidney biopsies and placing central lines for hemodialysis. Management of complex Glomerular diseases is learned in collaboration with nationally renowned renal pathologists. Interventional Nephrology training is part of every general nephrology fellow within the two-year clinical nephrology fellowship program. Training alongside more than 500 residents and fellows provides a platform for continued engagement and personal development. The Internal Medicine Residency Program Director and Student Clerkship Director are faculty members of the Nephrology Division. The interventional Nephrology fellowship offers the opportunity for general nephrology fellows to train in our nationally-recognized interventional lab. Learn More.

Patient Care

We are committed to providing comprehensive and personalized care for our patients with kidney disease. Ambulatory and telemedicine clinics focused on Chronic Kidney disease, Hypertension, Glomerular diseases, Transplant care, dialysis vascular access, and kidney stone prevention help patients from diverse geographical areas lower the disease burden. Hospital nephrology services provide acute and chronic dialysis care, Intensive care support, and management of complex glomerular diseases. Home hemodialysis, incenter hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis services are offered to over five hundred ESRD patients in over sixteen dialysis facilities across northwest Louisiana. Our Interventional Nephrology program strives to create and maintain dialysis access for CKD and ESRD patients.

Research

The Division of Nephrology is actively involved in a wide range of research areas. Several faculties are engaged in research programs that aim to improve access to care and improve patient outcomes. A core part of the institution’s mission, research on campus ranges from basic science to translational research and testing the latest therapies in clinical trials. Learn More.

PHILOSOPHY

Ours is a close-knit, people-oriented program, emphasizing all aspects of nephrology – consultation, primary care, dialysis, and interventional.  We provide a major portion of the education of our medical students, as well as extensive post-graduate training in Nephrology.  Our Fellows assume primary, hands-on responsibility for patient care under the guidance of experienced clinicians.  While we are proud of our training program and the quality of our trainees; we are constantly striving to make the program better, and to adapt to the forces of change in our filed. The challenge to the physicians and the employees of the department is to balance Patient Expectations, Patient Needs, and Available Resources to achieve Patient Satisfaction and Quality Care. We believe this can best be accomplished within a culture of mutual trust and respect.

Many of our clinical faculty members are leaders in their fields and enjoy national and international reputations. They participate in key national committees and serve in leadership roles in major national and international medical societies. They are truly engaged in the advancement of medical knowledge.   - Meet Our Faculty
