Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine provides outstanding clinical care to the patients served by Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport while supporting the growth and development of our students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff. We serve patients with a spectrum of respiratory diseases and critical illness and offer advanced technologies for the care of these patients.  Our academic medical center, Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, serves a broad geographic area with a diverse patient population in its clinics, Level 1 Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, Regional Burn Center, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, and multiple adult ICUs.  In collaboration with our colleagues in the Cancer Center, Center of Excellence in Arthritis and Rheumatology, Departments of ENT, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Neurosurgery, Neurology and Sleep Medicine, and intensivists in Anesthesia, Surgery and Trauma, and Pediatrics, we provide a multidisciplinary approach to disease management.

Our clinical programs offer trainees unique exposure to a remarkable range of educational experiences.  From the earliest days of fellowship using the simulation and cadaver lab, to their time covering the Extracorporeal Life Support service (ECMO, CRRT, etc.), to the exposure to advanced bronchoscopy and interventional pulmonary, the fellows graduating from our Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary/ Critical Care Medicine, and Interventional Pulmonology fellowships are well prepared for careers as clinicians and teachers.

This ability to serve our patients and students comes from the commitment of a close-knit group of professionals who make up our Section.  We regularly meet as a group outside of work to improve our current operations, plan for the future, and to celebrate the arrival (and graduation) of those who are part of our work family.

Fellowships

Education is one of our primary missions at the medical school and, like clinical care, is a particular focus of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.  Members participate in the education of students, residents, and fellows. We believe that experience is a great teacher, and we have our trainees actively participate at all levels in our educational mission. We are home to several training programs, including Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Interventional Pulmonology Fellowships.

Research

Research is a core element in the academic medicine, and our faculty are committed to advancing the science of our disciplines.  From the earliest days of the Section, Dr. Ronald B. George, the founding Chief of our Section, developed a robust, nationally-recognized research program, especially in pleural diseases and physiology.  We have re-committed to this effort, and the faculty are engaged in a variety of research, including extramurally sponsored clinical trials and, in collaboration with a variety of other faculty, investigator-initiated research efforts and quality improvement projects.  Research involving critical illness, advanced bronchoscopy/ minimally invasive pulmonary procedures, and pulmonary hypertension are of particular interest.
