Message from the Chair
I am greatly honored and privileged to serve this department and academic health sciences center. During its lengthy existence, many talented and well-trained fellow faculty members and professional associates have contributed to the growth and expansion of this service. Patients, residents, and students alike have benefited from the depth and breadth of knowledge brought to the department by urology subspecialists.
During these five decades, over one hundred young men and women have successfully completed urology training in our Residency Program and are actively practicing our specialty throughout the United States. The Residency Program has enjoyed continuous ACGME accreditation and the medical students who have regularly rotated through our service keep us constantly stimulated by their eagerness to learn and their ability to absorb knowledge.
The primary missions of this urology department have always been to: provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and compassionate treatment of urologic diseases for our patients; provide the highest quality of education and training to our medical and paramedical students and urology residents; and, push forward the boundaries of science and knowledge through research in our laboratories and clinics. We hope to instill in our graduates medical knowledge and clinical skills, as well as an awareness of the need for lifelong learning and self-improvement necessary to adapt to the ever-changing future of medicine.
During the past year, the department has gone through a significant expansion with the talented urologists of Regional Urology, LLC, joining the Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport health network and the Department of Urology full-time teaching faculty. This talented group has brought years of experience and a legacy of state-of-the-art, compassionate care to our department. The expansion has provided the department with great opportunities to deliver even more specialized care to our community and to expand the educational experiences for our trainees.

History and Background
The LSU Health Shreveport Department of Urology Residency was established in the late 1940’s by Dr. Robert K. Womack, with Dr. Burdette (Burt) Trichel taking over as Chairman in 1962. This preceded the opening of the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport, which accepted its first class of 32 students in September of 1969. Since then, the Urology Residency Program has enjoyed an uninterrupted period of accreditation and a legacy of outstanding clinical training.
The residents spend at least six months annually on the primary clinical service which is headquartered at the Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Academic Medical Center. This site is home to a Level 1 Trauma Center and serves as a major tertiary medical referral center for the northern half of Louisiana, East Texas, and Southern Arkansas. Residents obtain experience in general urology, pediatric urology, female/reconstructive urology, urologic oncology, minimally invasive surgery/robotics, and endourology. The hospital has dual console, da Vinci Xi robots, while the outpatient clinical facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art fluoroscopic tables, ultrasonography, and videourodynamic equipment. The training program also utilizes the nearby Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which is supervised by the full-time Urology faculty. While the traditional focus here has been on mastering open surgery, the VA is now the home of a new dual console da Vinci Xi. The residents additionally rotate on the Urology service maintained at the Willis Knighton Health System Hospitals — a full-service, private health care system also equipped with multiple da Vinci robots – utilizing a “one-on-one” mentorship model. Finally, formal rotations based at the Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport - St. Mary Medical Center and the Regional Urology campus are in the planning stages.
