Dr. Kenneth McMartin, Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology, Toxicology & Neuroscience, received the Career Achievement Award from the Clinical and Translational Toxicology Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology.

As Director of the BSL-3 Research Facility, Dr. Comer will identify and implement the research direction of the lab to support growth in research activity, educating internal and external audiences about the BSL-3 lab and promoting its capabilities and research impact.

On Thursday, February 15, LSU Health Shreveport Office for Research celebrated their successes of the previous year, including more than $23 million in extramural funding and 100+ clinical trials.

On Monday, December 11, Gov. John Bel Edwards joined officials with LSUHS to unveil the transformative Center for Medical Education, the first new building on the campus since 2008. More than 400 invited guests joined LSU and LSUHS leadership to celebrate the completion of the four-story, 155,000-square-foot, $79 million structure.

We are excited to announce that we have four new graduates from the School of Graduate Studies: Fawaz Alotaibi, Shripa Amatya, Vickky Pandit, and Utsab Subedi.

The MOU represents the desire of both parties to increase the number of African American students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Louisiana who apply to the LSU Health Shreveport School of Graduate Studies.

We are excited to announce that Qihui "Jim" Zhai, MD, FCAP (Professor and Chair of Pathology and Translational Pathobiology at LSUHS) is the newly elected President-elect of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Dr. Zhai was inaugurated at a meeting of the membership on Saturday, October 7, 2023. 

Dr. Kenneth McMartin received the Career Achievement Award from the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT) at the North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology (NACCT) meeting in Montreal, Canada on September 28, 2023.

LSUHS is excited to join universities across the United States taking part in the National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) during September. We celebrated our postdoctoral fellows with daily appreciation events across campus. 

The LSUHS School of Graduate Studies Graduate Student Council hosted their annual Graduate Research Day that allows faculty, graduate students, and post-doctorate fellows to share their research and network.

LSUHS hosted its largest commencement in the institution’s history with 224 students receiving a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD or Doctorate degree. This 50^th commencement milestone began on May 26, 1973, when 31 medical students received the first Doctorate degrees given by then, LSU School of Medicine.

The Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology is saddened to share the news of the passing of our esteemed colleague, Kenneth Peterson, PhD, who during his 35 years of service at LSUHS earned a reputation of being an excellent teacher and scientist.

Congratulations to Dr. Randa Eshaq, Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology. Dr. Eshaq was recently selected by the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) to serve on the Postdoctoral Council (PDC) for 2023-24.

Dr. David Guzick has been selected as the next chancellor of LSU Health Shreveport. Guzick, a member of the country’s premier honorific society for medical scientists and leaders, the National Academy of Medicine, will begin on Jan. 9, 2023.

318 Forum - The 155,000-square-foot Center for Medical Education will be home to large classroom spaces, clinical skills labs and simulation suites – each designed to encourage collaboration, active engagement and innovative thinking. 

This year the LSUHS Foundation celebrated record-breaking fundraising with more than $500,000 raised in a single year from more than 100 sponsors. Funds help LSUHS recruit and retain top faculty, acquire cutting-edge technology and equipment, and support programs for students at all three LSUHS schools.

Dr. Randa Eshaq was awarded an International Society for Neurovascular Disease Travel Award at the 2022 conference.

Three students from the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology receive special recognition and a grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

New students in the School of Graduate Studies along with high school and college students participating in LSU Health Shreveport summer research programs enjoyed a fun summer afternoon of tie-dying white coats.  

206 LSU Health Shreveport students representing the largest graduating class to date celebrated the culmination of hundreds of hours of academic accomplishment by graduating with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or Doctorate degree on May 21, 2022. Dr. William F. Tate IV, President of LSU gave the keynote commencement address.

We are saddened to share the news of the recent passing of two former School of Graduate Studies faculty members. The work of Dr. Dunn and Dr. Reed will live on through the countless students and post-docs that they taught throughout their careers. We extend our deepest sympathy to their families during this difficult time.

The scientific accomplishments of Dr. Eric First and Dr. Shile Huang have been recognized by our institution. Each has been promoted to full Professor, effective July 1, 2022. 

Graduate Student Appreciation Week was a week long celebration of our students in the School of Graduate Studies and included a Town Hall, along with wellness and social events.

The LSU Health Sciences Foundation of Shreveport hosted a Topping Out Ceremony celebrating the final structural beam being placed at the Center for Medical Education at LSU Health Shreveport on Wednesday, March 30. In addition, Ochsner LSU Health System announced an additional $8 million gift to the project.
