The LSU Health Shreveport Orthopaedic Residency Program began in 2007 with an emphasis on preparing its graduates with advanced knowledge and skills in managing patients with orthopaedic conditions. The program is built on the belief that mentoring the next generation of physical therapists through a year of specialized clinical skill development will benefit the profession, but more importantly, the people our profession serves.
Our program provides the best of both environments (academic and clinical) to the residents. This mixed setting has served the program well by allowing residents to have the unique experiences of an academic-clinical setting; conferences, rounds, and surgical observation at a Level I Trauma Center, in addition, to the residents having the same access and privileges as a faculty member within the DPT program since the program is housed within our Physical Therapy program. Additionally, our residents’ main location of practice is the Rehabilitation Faculty Practice Clinic, a multidisciplinary clinic operated on the ground floor of the School where the program mentors are available throughout the day.
Since receiving a full 10-year re-accreditation in 2014, the program has continued to develop, including more options for the residents to serve as clinical instructors in the DPT program, in addition to assisting with didactic education. Additionally, our program continues to provide instructional content outside of the clinical environment to our residents, including advanced anatomy and biomechanics, a review of current evidence, advanced manual therapy, teaching and learning, and functional rehabilitation techniques.

Mission Statement
Prepare physical therapists with advanced knowledge and skills for the clinical management of patients/clients with orthopaedic conditions. This process will occur in a culture/environment of learning and shared governance, emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning as a key to maintaining high-level, evidence-based practice.
In accordance with the new vision of APTA to, “Transform society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience,”1 we aim to influence not only our residents, but our profession and community. Through offering a quality, integrated, patient-centered post-doctoral training program, we aim to have a lasting impact on our environment by changing the culture of healthcare wherever our program is involved. This starts by ensuring quality preparation for all our faculty and residents, and ensuring the effects are observed over time.

Giving Residents what they need to be successful as their own independent expert clinician.
Goals
- The program will uphold the mission of LSU Health Shreveport by providing an increased number of clinicians with an advanced level of clinical training and education in the area of orthopaedic physical therapy, as defined by the Description of Specialty Practice (DSP) and Description of Residency Practice (DRP). (Outcomes 1 and 2)
- The program will prepare the resident for successful completion of the ABPTS orthopaedic specialty examination, and practice at an advanced clinical level. (Outcome 3)
- The program will value and emulate independent, self-determined professional judgement within our scope of practice, consistent with the profession’s codes and standards and the patient/client’s best interest. (Outcome 4)
- The program will advance the residents’ proficiency in the application of collaborative team-based care, consistent with patient-centered care. (Outcome 4)
- The program will prepare the resident to use evidence and outcome measures to promote expert practice, efficacy, and cost effectiveness of physical therapy interventions. (Outcome 5)
- The program will provide the resident with experience in both the didactic and clinical teaching environment, as part of a teaching culture inherent to the university and profession. (Outcome 6)
- The program will continue to develop and recruit specialist faculty, sustain and build relationships with other professions, and serve the university/community. (Outcome 7)
Outcomes
- The resident will pass practical examinations with rubrics based upon the DSP and DRP, in addition to written examinations.
- The resident will provide high-level, specialized management for a diverse population of patients presenting with pathologies consistent with those enumerated in the DRP.
- All graduates will sit for, and have success on, the ABPTS OCS examination.
- All residents and graduates will demonstrate their professional judgment via self and peer assessments in order to demonstrate their compliance with the profession’s codes and standards.
- All residents will yield positive trends in their patients’ outcomes throughout the course of the program.
- All residents will have taught in the DPT curriculum both clinically and didactically during their residency, and will continue to in some manner post-graduation.
- Continued sustainability will be achieve through: residency faculty will be provided with continuing education opportunities, the residency will have working relationships with other disciplines within or outside the university, and the residents and faculty will serve beyond the physical therapy program and be valued as contributors via financial support.
The LSUHS Orthopaedic Residency Program is accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education as a postprofessional residency program for physical therapists in orthopaedics.
