Our division of Infectious Disease plays a vital role in the Department of Medicine at LSU Health Shreveport and in our community. Our goal is to attract students to the medical field of treatment and prevention of infectious disease, to improve treatment in our local community and surrounding area through an increase in well-trained staff and physicians, and to provide enhanced care with improved facilities. We play a proactive role in our region of Northwest Louisiana through interface with community and emergency preparedness officials for necessary support and planning for infectious disease awareness and prevention. Our faculty and fellows service three area clinics treating Hepatitis C, Viral Disease and General Infection Disease. We also work with our medical facilities and hospital partners to construct an institution of care by providing them with input on infection control and appropriate use of anti-microbial agents to reduce infectious disease overall.

We offer a Two-year ACGME accredited fellowship program in Infection Disease with Three total fellows. All Infectious Disease Faculty physicians are board certified and active in teaching. Fellows see inpatients at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport and Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, and outpatients at the three clinics below.

HEPATITIS C CLINIC

Our Hepatitis C Clinic is located in the Ambulatory Care Center of Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Academic Medical Center. We have expanded our staff to provide for the increase of patients with infections seeking treatment at our clinic. We currently provide treatment for more than 5,000 patients in North Louisiana. Our faculty is also taking part in a statewide effort to respond to this increase in infections.

VIRAL DISEASE CLINIC

Our Viral Disease Clinic is located at 6670 St Vincent Ave, Shreveport, LA 71106. We currently provide treatment to 850 patients with HIV. Through the extensive amount of diseases being treated through this facility, research in a variety of areas is able to be done including Dr. Nambiar's studies on syphilis in pregnancy and pre-exposure therapy for HIV discordant couples.

GENERAL ID CLINIC

Our General Infectious Disease Clinic is located in the Ambulatory Care Center Medicine-Specialty Clinic of Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Academic Medical Center. Through this clinic we are growing our research in bone infections, heart infections, fevers, and post-operative infections, among other areas of treatment. Due to the vast number of patients who need treatment throughout our region, our goal is to include Telemedicine in the near future as a regular part of our program.
