LSU Health Shreveport has maintained a fully ACGME-accredited Endocrinology Fellowship program since 1988. Every fellow who has trained with us has achieved Board Certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. This is attributable to the features highlighted below, as well as to the positive setting in which we work. LSU Health Shreveport is a full-fledged academic health center encompassing the medical school and a full complement of departments and centers - including the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, the Regional Transplant Center, the PET Center with onsite cyclotron, and the Gamma Knife Center.

  2. To train endocrinology fellows in routine and advanced procedures in endocrinology.
  3. To train endocrinology fellows in successful coordination of care in multidisciplinary private-practice or academic settings.
  4. To prioritize fellow wellness and to foster attention to lifelong wellness.
  5. To foster the value of lifelong learning.
  6. To implement clinical services for obesity management in northwest Louisiana.

Requirements

Fellows are required to develop and complete a Scholarly project during their 2-year fellowship. Typically this consists of case reports and poster presentations at national meetings, or writing review articles, book chapters, or participating in clinical studies with assistance from faculty members.

Fellows also design and complete a Quality Improvement project aimed to reduce health care disparities.

Fellows are provided funding annually to Attend a national meeting of their choice, such as the American Diabetes Association, the American Thyroid Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, or the Endocrine Society. Fellows also Attend Endocrine University sessions sponsored by the Mayo Clinic and AACE, enhancing their experience and knowledge with national and international expert mentors.

Other benefits of training at our institution can be found here.

Training occurs at two sites.

Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport Hospital provides an excellent educational environment and a wealth of patients encompassing the complete spectrum of endocrine disease. The Hospital has 500 beds, offering primary through tertiary care, and is a referral center for a population of over 1,000,000. Yearly, there are over 8,350 admissions to the Internal Medicine Service and over 38,500 visits to medical subspecialty clinics. An electronic health record (EPIC) is used.
