Welcome to the LSU Health Shreveport Department of Surgery Website. On behalf of the faculty, thank you for your interest in our General Surgery Training Program. We are committed to providing the environment and tools to train competent residents who can operate with confidence through successfully achieving all six ACGME competencies. Our diverse training style allows for adequate supervision with controlled autonomy for a more enriched hands-on learning.

We monitor the well-being of each resident closely as it is vital for the resident and his/her patients. We care about our residents and do everything possible to prevent physician burnout and distress. The Department of Surgery creates a collegial atmosphere between the faculty, departmental leadership, and the residents. We support and help one another as we work hard.

The Department of Surgery is committed to the education and training of talented surgical clinicians, incorporating skills, knowledge, and competencies that are essential to providing the highest standard of care.  We train surgical residents to become the future leaders of academic surgery.

The strategy by which we fulfill the mission of our Program consists of an intense five-year curriculum of didactic and Socratic instruction leading to a broadly based and in-depth knowledge of all the primary components of surgery. While SCORE is used as a broad-based general surgical curriculum, continuous self-directed learning is expected from and required of each resident. Inherent in this strategy is increasing responsibility for the delivery of care by residents based upon their knowledge and experience.

Milestones:

Milestones are designed by the ACGME for programs to use in semi-annual reviews of resident performance and reporting to the ACGME. Milestones are knowledge, skills, attitudes, and other attributes for each of the ACGME competencies organized in a developmental framework from less to more advanced. They are descriptors and targets for resident performance as a resident moves from entry into residency through graduation. In the initial years of implementation, the Review Committee will examine milestone performance data for each program’s residents as one element in the Next Accreditation System (NAS) to determine whether residents overall are progressing.
