Welcome to the LSU Health Shreveport Department of Surgery Website. On behalf of the faculty, thank you for your interest in our General Surgery Training Program. We are committed to providing the environment and tools to train competent residents who can operate with confidence through successfully achieving all six ACGME competencies. Our diverse training style allows for adequate supervision with controlled autonomy for a more enriched hands-on learning.

We monitor the well-being of each resident closely as it is vital for the resident and his/her patients. We care about our residents and do everything possible to prevent physician burnout and distress. The Department of Surgery creates a collegial atmosphere between the faculty, departmental leadership, and the residents. We support and help one another as we work hard.

Again, thank you for your interest in our Program, and we look forward to meeting you soon.

Our Mission is to train surgeons who are leaders in the communities in which they live and work.

Train with us.

The Department of Surgery is committed to the education and training of talented surgical clinicians, incorporating skills, knowledge, and competencies that are essential to providing the highest standard of care.  We train surgical residents to become the future leaders of academic surgery.

Essential Qualities:
  1. A comprehensive understanding of the current medical and surgical literature and the basic science that underlies patient care.
  2. A technical expertise in the safe and efficient conduct of operative procedures.
  3. A sincere compassion for the welfare of our patients and a genuine concern for their loved ones.

The strategy by which we fulfill the mission of our Program consists of an intense five-year curriculum of didactic and Socratic instruction leading to a broadly based and in-depth knowledge of all the primary components of surgery. While SCORE is used as a broad-based general surgical curriculum, continuous self-directed learning is expected from and required of each resident. Inherent in this strategy is increasing responsibility for the delivery of care by residents based upon their knowledge and experience.

Milestones:

Milestones are designed by the ACGME for programs to use in semi-annual reviews of resident performance and reporting to the ACGME. Milestones are knowledge, skills, attitudes, and other attributes for each of the ACGME competencies organized in a developmental framework from less to more advanced. They are descriptors and targets for resident performance as a resident moves from entry into residency through graduation. In the initial years of implementation, the Review Committee will examine milestone performance data for each program’s residents as one element in the Next Accreditation System (NAS) to determine whether residents overall are progressing.

ACGME Competencies
  1. Patient Care and Procedural Skills
  2. Medical Knowledge
  3. Practice-based Learning and Improvement
  4. Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  5. Professionalism
  6. Systems-based Practice

Why do Residents choose our Program?

Surgery Testimonial - Armstrong
Francesca Armstrong photo

"My years spent as a surgery resident at LSU Health Shreveport were some of the best of my life. I ranked this program at the top of my match list because the residents I worked with as a student were so confident and competent, but also because of the camaraderie amongst them. I knew I would learn a lot from the General Surgery staff as well. My experience was true to my impression. The autonomy given to me as a resident was so crucial to my training. Treating complex patients and pathology and having exceptional hands-on training was so valuable.  I went into private practice after graduation, and I have felt comfortable and confident in my practice because of what I learned from my former chief residents as well as from the attendings I trained with. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to train here." Francesca Armstrong, MD

"The general surgery residency in Shreveport has prepared me very well for my vascular surgery training in Memphis. The program excels in the autonomy provided to the residents in and outside of the operating room. I would especially recommend this residency for those who are looking to comfortably start practicing after completion of the 5 years. Ochsner LSU also has very a high volume of trauma and vascular patients providing additional operative and critical care experience that I feel is very complimentary to our general surgery training. I have been very pleased with my training experience and there are many other aspects of the program that contribute heavily to our training that I did not mention. Overall, this residency program delivers a well-rounded experience to our general surgery residents."  Nicholas Pelliccio, MD

“I am so grateful for my time at LSU Health Shreveport. Surgery residency is hard, but the people here make it worth it. The residents became my extended family, the staff became my mentors, and the patients I got to help made it all worthwhile. On top of all that, the complex pathology and the operative experience prepared me for entering the private practice without having to pursue a fellowship.”  Beatriz Briones, MD
