Externships for Senior (4th-year) Medical Students

We are offering in-person rotations this year.

LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine offers 4-week externships for senior (4th-year) medical students throughout the year.  The months of June through September tend to be popular due to the Urology Match and early application is suggested.  The inpatient acting subinternship (SIURA) involves participation on the Urology services at the Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, VA Medical Center, and Willis Knighton South and Pierremont hospitals, while the community Urology rotation (SCURA) is based at Willis Knighton.

On both rotations, students will have a widely varied clinical experience – working directly with Urology residents, taking case histories, assisting in the operating room, attending conferences, seminars and demonstrations, and interacting with faculty physicians.  Although the curriculum is flexible, students should prepare for cases and conferences as any other member of the team and will be held accountable as any team member would be.  At the end of the 4-week rotation, students will give a presentation at Grand Rounds on a Urologic topic of their choosing to residents and faculty.  The presentation should be evidence-based, and articles from accredited journals should be referenced.

In order to be an effective member of the medical team and ensure the best educational experience, students should review the basics of urology prior to the start of their externship.  The National Medical Student Curriculum is an excellent reference and is available on the AUA website at www.auanet.org.
