Members of our department received awards for their presentations at the 2024 Louisiana Chapter of American College of Surgeons annual meeting.
The Department of Surgery is saddened to share that Dr. Christine Long Almazan, a first-year surgery resident and 2023 graduate of the LSUHS School of Medicine, lost her valiant battle with cancer on February 9. She was deeply beloved by her fellow residents, attendings and staff in the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Michael Sutherland, Director, Division of Member Services American College of Surgeons, and Professor of Surgery Ohio State University spoke at the 2023 Abramson Visiting Professor Conference.
A number of LSUHS Surgery faculty and residents, along with LSUHS medical students, made presentations at the LA-ACS Annual Meeting on March 24-26, 2023 in New Orleans, LA.
Dr. William Ishee and Dr. Lance “Tyler” Albin were resident inductees into the Gold Humanism Honor Society for 2023. GHHS recognizes students, residents and faculty who are exemplars of compassionate patient care and who serve as role models, mentors and leaders in medicine.
318Forum - Dr. Jane Sugar, Assistant Professor of Surgery at LSUHS, shares, "Early detection matters for any woman, whether she is high-risk for breast cancer or low-risk. Lifestyle changes focusing on modifiable risk factors will lower risk for many women, but breast cancer screening remains an important part of breast health."

The Office of Academic Affairs and the SAGE Honor Society have named Dr. William Ishee, PGY-5, Department of Surgery, as the November 2022 Superior Teaching Award and Recognition (STAR) recipient.

The late John C. McDonald, first Chancellor of LSU Health Shreveport (2001-2009), was awarded the 2022 Pioneer Award by The American Society of Transplantation at the American Transplant Congress in Boston on June 5, 2022.
