The Problem: Adverse Childhood Experiences

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are common and corrosive. When children experience the harsh conditions of too many ACEs, the resulting toxic stress can derail healthy development. As the number of ACEs increases, so does the risk for a multitude of chronic health and life problems. There are many indicators that ACEs are high in Northwest Louisiana.

38%
of Northwest Louisiana children under five live in poverty.

64%
of Louisiana children do not meet the criteria for flourishing.

Children with 4+ ACEs and no trusted adult were eight times more likely
to engage in multiple health-harming behaviors.

The Solution: Build Resilience
with the expertise and support of LSU Health Shreveport

The powerful antidote to trauma and adversity is Resilience - a combination of attributes, experiences, and skills that allow an individual to succeed and thrive in spite of harsh conditions. Resilience can be built at any point in a person’s lifespan, resulting in improved wellbeing.
