The Department of Pediatrics believes the best patient care is delivered when the  major responsibilities rest with the intern and resident while having highly accessible attendings and consultants.  Thus, pediatric residents take active roles in patient care and are the primary care physicians under faculty supervision on all inpatient services and in the Pediatric Ambulatory Clinic (PAC).  We believe that interns must “learn by doing” in order to succeed as a pediatrician.  The large referral area of Ochsner LSU Health assures that experience is gained over a wide spectrum of common and uncommon illnesses.  Supervision and teaching of medical students is another important facet of Pediatric training at Shreveport, and there are numerous opportunities for research as well.

There are two campuses where our residents work and learn:

Except for Pediatric Trauma, SMMC is the location for all in-patient pediatric care.

  1. In-Patient Pediatric Ward: We have a 22 bed pediatric in-patient ward with all private rooms.
  2. Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: We have an 8 bed PICU with room to expand. All rooms are private.
  3. Well Newborn Nursery: Labor and Delivery is located just down the hall from our well newborn nursery.
  4. Neonatal Intensive Unit: We have a 40 bed NICU designed so that each baby has it's own "pod". Mothers are able to have privacy with their babies, yet nurses have ready access to them.

All General Pediatric Outpatient Clinics, including Continuity Clinics, are at this location. In addition, Pediatric Emergency Care is located here.  The pediatric emergency care services (pediatric emergency room) are located at OLHS with a Level 1 Trauma Center. Pediatric trauma is taken to OLHS and all pediatric trauma is admitted to and cared for by OLHS.

Number of Beds:  452 / Number of ORs:  27
