Research mentors, along with the program director and customized Scholarship Oversight Committee, will provide sufficient mentorship and guidance to make the research experience very educational. All the fellows are expected to choose clinical, translational, or basic science research pathways in the neonatal subfield of their interest. By the end of first half of their first year, after working with different mentors in the field of their interest, each fellow is expected to choose their mentors. With the help of biostatisticians and research mentors, the individual fellow is expected to finalize the research question and study hypothesis. By the end of the first year, each fellow is expected to prepare a detailed protocol and analysis plan that will be presented to the scholarship oversight committee and to the division of Neonatology. During the second year, the individual fellow, working closely with his/her research mentor, is expected to complete the IRB approval/animal bioethics committee approval process and complete the animal experiment or clinical data collection. With the help of biostatisticians and research mentor, fellows are expected to complete the data analysis by the end of their second year. During the third year, the analyzed data will be presented at the division/department level, and the abstract will be presented at national and international conferences. Each fellow, during their third year of fellowship, will write a detailed manuscript which will be reviewed and approved by the research mentor for submission to a suitable medical journal. All throughout the research endeavors, each fellow will be well supported and well guided by the PD, neonatologists and core faculty members, SOC committee and research mentors.
