Speaking and swallowing are abilities that most people take for granted. But these seemingly simple tasks are actually very complex functions. For example, swallowing a sip of water involves more than 50 nerves and muscles working together. A number of illnesses, such as allergies, stroke and even chronic heartburn can interrupt normal throat functions. That is why conditions that affect speaking, singing, swallowing and breathing may require specialized care to pinpoint and treat problems.
The Center’s unique approach involves evaluation of patients with voice, breathing or swallowing problems by both an otolaryngologist and a speech pathologist as needed in the same premises. Usually, these specialists work in separate clinics, requiring the patient to seek care in multiple locations. A comprehensive surgical, medical, or rehabilitation management plan, tailored to the individual patient, is then developed without delay. Quick targeted referrals are set up with neurologists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, and thoracic surgeons especially interested in the care of patients with dysphonia, dyspnea and dysphagia. Each patient receives a personalized treatment and monitoring regimen based on his or her medical and personal needs.
