Residency Application Requirements
Application Requirements and Procedures
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery selects 3 residents per year for matriculation into the fully accredited MD-integrated 6-year training program, as well as 1 resident per year for matriculation into the fully accredited non-MD-integrated 4-year training program.
Length of Program: 6 and 4 Years
Graduate Degree Offered: M.D.
Required Number of Evaluation Forms: 3 Forms
Recommended Evaluators: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery faculty
Attributes to be Evaluated: Didactic and clinical performance, interpersonal skills, and a commitment to Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
Application Requirements
(These requirements are prerequisites and must be included in PASS Application UNLESS specified below to be sent directly to program):
- Must have passed Part 1, National Board of Dental Examiners (NBDE).
- Must be ranked academically at or above 90th percentile of class.
- Must submit undergraduate college transcripts through PASS.
- Must submit dental school transcripts through PASS.
- Must submit a CV/Resume through PASS.
- Must submit original Part 1, National Board of Dental Examiners (NBDE) score through PASS.
- Must submit National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE) score through PASS.
- Must submit letters of evaluation through PASS.
- Must submit a 2" x 2" photo through PASS.
- Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
- Permanent residents must show proof of residency.
- Must be a graduate of a U.S. or Canadian dental school.
- Must have a limited permit.
- Must be proficient in the English language.
- Must have foreign transcripts evaluated by the program.
- Must have foreign transcripts submitted to the program.
Matriculation Requirements
(These requirements are mandatory for matriculation and must be completed prior to matriculation into program):
- Must submit an original dental school diploma to the program.
- Must have passed Parts 1 and 2, National Board of Dental Examiners (NBDE).
- Must have earned a D.M.D./D.D.S. degree, or equivalent.
- Must be eligible for state dental license.
Preliminary Internship
Preliminary Internship
Each year, the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery offers two to three positions for a 1-year fully-funded preliminary internship. The positions are open to any graduate of a US or Canadian Dental School. The main goal of the internship is to provide dental graduates and/or prospective OMFS applicants the opportunity to gain access to hands-on OMFS training in both inpatient and ambulatory settings, in preparation for future applications for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The preliminary intern functions as a categorical PGY-1 resident and participates in all of the same responsibilities. These include but are not limited to:
- Functioning as the on-call resident on all inpatients and consults on the OMFS service
- Minor surgical procedures involving laceration repair, dentoalveolar surgery, trauma, infections
- Daily morning/evening rounds
- Observing/participating in operating room cases at the various hospitals
- Active patient care in the Ambulatory Care Clinic in all procedures performed at this outpatient clinic
- Participation in departmental seminars/conferences/meetings
Applications are accepted immediately following the Match Results.
Applicants must submit the following materials:
- A letter of recommendation from the Dean of Academic Affairs at your dental school.
- Three letters of recommendation from Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery staff at your dental school, or at programs with which you may have participated in an externship.
- A copy of your PASS application.
- Curriculum vitae.
- CBSE Score Report
- All undergraduate/graduate/dental school transcripts.
- A recent 2” x 2” photo with name written on back.
- A personal statement.
- Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
- Permanent residents must show proof of residency.
- Must be a graduate of a U.S. or Canadian dental school.
All qualified applicants will be contacted by phone and invited for a personal interview, a requirement for acceptance.
Externship
Externship in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Externships will open starting August 1, 2021. Please contact to schedule.
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery offers a 1 - 4 week externship program available to dental students from all US & Canadian Dental Schools. The main goal of the program is to provide students with the opportunity to observe the full scope of the specialty from both an ambulatory and inpatient setting. While under the direct supervision of residents and staff, students will be afforded the opportunity to observe/participate in all of the residents’ daily responsibilities. These include but are not limited to:
- Pre-rounding with the on-call resident on all inpatients and consults on OMFS service
- Daily morning/evening rounds
- Taking trauma and in-house call with the residents
- Observing/participating in operating room cases at the various hospitals
- Observing/participating in the various clinics (Faculty, Resident, Head & Neck, TMJ, Cleft, Plagiocephaly, and Craniofacial at the LSU Campus, Willis-Knighton South and North Campuses, and Shriners Hospitals for Children)
- Participation in departmental seminars/conferences/meetings
Students are prepared with a better understanding of resident life at the intern/mid/senior levels, as well as a general understanding of the specialty as a whole. We limit the program to a maximum of four externs at any one time.
Extern Schedule
Students must have completed the second year of dental school and may apply by providing the following information:
- A completed Externship Application.
- A letter of recommendation from the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at your dental school.
- A letter from your dental school certifying that you will be covered under their malpractice insurance plan during the rotation, $500,000 minimum. The letter should include the policy number and amount of coverage.
- Proof of health insurance and required immunizations.
- A current transcript.
- A recent 2” x 2” photo with name written on back.
- A letter outlining the student’s objective for the externship.
- Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination
Externs will be granted temporary I.D. badges on the first day of the externship that will provide them access to LSU and the various affiliate hospitals for the duration of their stay. We can accommodate you in our on-call room for the duration of the externship, unless you desire to make your own arrangements.
Please note that externships are not available during the month of July.
