APPLY | Ophthalmology Residency
Ophthalmology Residency Application Information
The Department of Ophthalmology accepts four residents to our program each year. All applicants must register and submit an application through the SFMatch Central Application System.
Applications for the 2025-2026 Match season are due by September 12, 2025. Interview dates to be determined. Applicants that are invited to interview will receive more information regarding the virtual interview day and schedule via email from the Department of Ophthalmology.
As the internal medicine/ophthalmology internship is a required part of our residency, candidates also need to register with the National Resident Matching Program. There will not be a separate interview for the intern year, and matched ophthalmology candidates will not need to interview with the Department of Internal Medicine. Applicants who match with the LSU Health Shreveport for their ophthalmology residency are required to submit a NRMP rank list with the LSU Health Internal Medicine/ Ophthalmology intern year as their only selection.

Our Joint Internship
Residents who match at LSU Health Shreveport are required to complete their intern year at LSU Health Shreveport. In partnership with LSU Health Shreveport's Internal Medicine Program, the four interns will spend 40 weeks in a combination of emergency medicine, medicine sub-specialties, wards, MICU, night float, and ambulatory general medicine rotation blocks; and 3, four week long blocks of Ophthalmology. Interns have three weeks of vacation over the year. During the ophthalmology blocks, interns will:
- Learn basic examination skills and techniques
- Participate in all scheduled ophthalmology didactic sessions and joint-departmental case conferences
- Observe in the operating room, working with ophthalmology attendings
- Access the EyeSi surgical simulator
We believe the joint internship promotes a smooth transition between the PGY-1 year and the PGY-2 year, allowing familiarity with the Ochsner LSUHS hospital system, the electronic medical records, and by establishing professional relationships with LSU Health Shreveport departments' faculty, residents, and staff. The increased ophthalmology experience provides interns with tools to learn the basics before their ophthalmology residency begins.
TRAIN WITH US
The Supplemental Application is only needed from applicants who accept LSUHS Ophthalmology interview invitations per instructions from the Program Director and Program Administrator during the interview process.
