The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at LSU Health Shreveport offers a four-year program for a total resident complement of 28 positions (seven positions at each level of training). Our main campus is the St. Mary’s Medical Center where our obstetrics and gynecology services are located. Rotations at the Ochsner LSU Monroe Medical Center is in Monroe, Louisiana which is approximately 100 miles east of Shreveport. Housing is provided.
Residency Program Curriculum Overview
The following is an overview of the clinical experiences obtained during the four years of training.
PGY-1
Our residents rotate through different obgyn and medical services. The resident obtains basic skills in the management of uncomplicated obstetric and gynecologic patients.

During the second year, the resident progressively develops more responsibilities. They are finally “in charge” of the labor and delivery unit with constant faculty supervision. They are the consultant for the gyn service.

The residents obtain more experience in gynecologic surgery. They assume a more active role in the supervision of junior residents.

Our chief residents function as leaders and consultants. They refine their management and surgical skills. They directly supervise junior residents and medical students. They learn to be independent practitioners of OBGYN.

Research
All Residents in the Obstetrics and Gynecology training program are required to participate in a research project under the supervision of a chosen faculty member. These projects are presented at the PGY- 3 level at the Resident Research Forum held annually in June. A First place prize is awarded.
Over the years, our residents have presented their research papers at national scientific meetings, many of which have won awards and gone on to be published in peer-review journals. Other research opportunities are available through individual Faculty for residents who have a special interest or research background.
Didactics
The teaching program involves members of the faculty, residents, and visiting professors from other departments and institutions. We expect all residents and faculty members to attend these conferences and actively participate. Each clinical service chief also conducts teaching rounds.
The following didactics are offered on a daily/weekly/monthly schedule.
- Tuesday Morning Conference: Presented weekly by faculty, residents, guest faculty and visiting professors on core OB/GYN topics and ACOG practice bulletins.
- M & M Conference: Case lists presented monthly by PGY-3 or PGY-4 residents head of service. Services include Labor Unit, GYN, Tumor and Night Float.
- Journal Club: Monthly at faculty member’s home or a local restaurant to discuss current articles in OB/GYN.
- OB/GYN Grand Rounds: Presented weekly by faculty, residents, guest faculty and visiting professors.
- Quality Improvement Grand Rounds: QI topics presented monthly and discussed with a faculty and resident of choosing.
- GYN Preoperative Conference: Patients scheduled for surgery are presented weekly.
- Friday Didactics / Simulation: Topics chosen by faculty/ residents to lead afternoon conference with simulation at least 2x monthly.
- Ochsner LSU Health - Monroe Medical Center Curriculum: Specific resident level topics to be completed while on Monroe rotation.
