July, 2022 - Abu Saleh Mosa Faisal joined Dr. Bhuiyan's Lab as a Biostatistician.
My research focuses on developing and applying advanced mathematical and statistical models to understand complex cardiovascular, neurobehavioral, and metabolic diseases. I combine standard biostatistics with new techniques like machine learning, deep learning, and image processing to study various types of data, such as electronic health records, medical images (like MRI and digital pathology), and complex biological data.
By building predictive and mechanistic models of disease risk, progression, and treatment response, my lab aims to improve early diagnosis, refine patient stratification, and advance precision medicine. We develop novel algorithms and AI-driven pipelines for image analysis, data harmonization, and biomarker discovery, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Taymaz Akan, PhD

Taymaz Akan is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Bhuiyan's lab. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Engineering at Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey in 2019. He is experienced on image processing and optimization algorithms. His research focus is to optimize MRI images and develop disease progression model.
Niels Dickson, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
Niels Dickson is a Postdoctoral Fellow working with Dr. Bhuiyan and Dr. Chen Lin (Neurology). He earned his PhD in Language Science from the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on computational models of language acquisition and cognitive theories of learning. Through this work, he developed expertise in probabilistic modeling, machine learning, and language modeling, including large language models (LLMs). Dr. Dickson’s current research focuses on developing and applying computational and machine‑learning models to clinical problems. His work emphasizes integrating modern LLM architectures with statistical modeling to improve risk assessment, outcome prediction, and clinical decision‑support tools.
Mohammad Nahian Abrar, PhD
Biostatistician
Mohammad Nahian Abrar, PhD, is a Biostatistician with expertise in high-dimensional omics data analysis for the identification of genetic and epigenetic biomarkers associated with human disease. His work experience spans statistical methodology for omics studies, R package development, and applied research in epigenetics, mediation analysis, and longitudinal modeling of sepsis readmission. Dr. Abrar earned his PhD in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from the University of Memphis. His current research focuses on biomedical research applications, predictive modeling, and the development of analytical pipelines that support physicians in disease risk assessment and clinical decision-making.

MD-PhD Student
Diensn Xing is a dedicated MD-PhD student with a background in biological engineering, having previously researched breast cancer as an undergraduate at LSU A&M. He has a strong interest in internal medicine and population health and has already contributed to peer-reviewed publications highlighting the trends in demographic disparities in mental health and substance use disorders. Recognized for both academic excellence and leadership, he has been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies. Beyond the lab, Diensn provides primary care at a community health clinic weekly, demonstrating his commitment to service and direct patient care. Outside of medicine, he enjoys volleyball, making music, and competitive esports, reflecting his diverse interests and holistic approach to life.
