CURRICULUM | Internal Medicine / Pediatrics Residency

Pediatric Rotations:

• Pediatric Wards
  • Location: St. Mary Medical Center
  • There are 2 ward teams that each consist of 1 attending, 1 upper level resident, and at least 2 interns.
  • The teams share call. During call, there will be 1 upper level resident and 1 “late” intern.
  • Checkout is at 7 AM and 7 PM.
  • Night Float System
    • There will be 1 upper level Peds or Med-Peds resident that will care for the admitted pediatric patients and admit new patients overnight Sunday through Friday.
    • Med-Peds residents will complete their pediatric night float month during their 3^rd year.
    • Interns do have overnight call on this rotation, usually 4-5 consecutive weeknights and 1 Saturday.
    • The upper level residents will divide Saturday call, which is a 24-hour call. The upper level residents are never on call on Sunday as there is cross-coverage.

Ambulatory Med-Peds

This is a 1-month long required elective that is only offered to our upper-level Med-Peds residents. During this rotation, residents rotate at our Provenance Primary Care Clinic located in South Shreveport. This clinic houses the faculty clinic of Dr. Callegan-Poché. Our residents are able to work one-on-one with our Med-Peds attendings in their own Med-Peds clinic. This is a wonderful opportunity for our residents to see another side of outpatient medicine and to learn about the workings of a private practice. Residents are also exposed to healthcare for LGTBQ+ patients on this rotation. 

Internal Medicine Rotations:

• Medicine Wards:
  • Location: Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport or Overton Brooks VA Medical Center
  • At Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, there are 5 general medicine ward teams. There is also 1 subspecialty ward team (Cardiology). Teams are on call every 5^th day.
  • At the VA, there are 3 general medicine ward teams. Teams are on call every 3^rd day. 
  • Each team consists of an attending, 1-2 residents, and 1-2 interns.
  • Night Float System
    • Med-Peds residents have 1 month of night float during their 2^nd year. 
    • There are 2 residents and 2 interns that make up the night float team at the main hospital and 1 resident and 1 intern that make up the night float team at the VA.
    • Both hospitals employ nocturnists.

• Admits & Consults
  • Location: Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport
  • This rotation takes place during the 4^th year of residency. For 2 weeks, the resident will hold and answer the admit pager, triage patients that are being admitted, and coordinate care/transfer to the accepting team. During the other 2 weeks, they will act as a consulting physician for services that request an internal medicine consult for their patients.
