Welcome to the LSU Health Shreveport Rural Family Medicine Program in Winnsboro, Louisiana. Winnsboro is a town of about 5,000 people, located roughly 40 miles from Monroe in Northeast Louisiana. It’s a quiet little town with an outsized healthcare need. Having a catchment area of around 27,000 patients in a region noted to have some of the highest rates of heart and lung disease in the nation, Franklin Medical Center serves a critical role in the well-being of the people of this community. We reside roughly an hour from the closest tertiary care centers in our region and have no other residencies closer than that as well.

What does that mean to you? More patient encounters, more complex cases, fewer barriers between you and procedures, and highly individualized training to prepare you for whatever might cross your path in practice.

Our philosophy here at the Rural Residency is simple.
We are training physicians that should be able to serve the needs of their communities, wherever they are. Whether that’s filling in ER shifts, rounding on the inpatient ward, or treating critical patients in the ICU, you should be ready.

My personal philosophy, further, is that the more and sicker patients you are comfortable in managing, the better prepared you’ll be to function as an outstanding primary care physician. I hope this information provides a clear picture of the wealth of experience there is to be had at our residency. We at the Rural Residency Program in Winnsboro look forward to welcoming you into our team and our community.
