Message from the Program Director: 
Thomas C. Arnold, MD, FAAEM, FACMT

In the early 1990s, we realized that in order to provide the best possible patient care, delivery of that care had to be wrapped in the milieu of a residency training program. It is only the environment created by the curiosity of emergency medicine residents that attracts the best and brightest minds as teachers, researchers, and clinicians and motivates these individuals to work together for a common goal. That goal is to provide outstanding emergency patient care and to train the emergency physicians of the future in this wonderful art.

Since the beginning, we have been building a varied faculty of Emergency Medicine clinicians, researchers, and educators in preparation for the development of our residency training program. We are confident that all the components are in place to provide outstanding emergency medicine care and training. Our institution is the tertiary referral center and serves as the only level 1 trauma center for the entire region. The pathology is tremendous, the atmosphere is cordial, and we invite those interested in pursuing excellence in a non-threatening, but structured, environment to come join us.

Thank you for your interest in Emergency Medicine at LSU Health Shreveport. Our faculty are excited to train new Emergency Physicians to excel in the field. We pride ourselves on actively educating our residents using multi-modality learning tools in a friendly and supportive environment to prepare our residents for a fulfilling future in Emergency Medicine.

We are a fully accredited program that participates in the NMRP matching process. We accept 9 residents per year for our 3-year residency program. We are also affiliated with an accredited dual EM/FM residency program that takes an additional 2 residents per year. Our curriculum follows the American Board of Emergency Medicine’s Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine to achieve successful training and board pass rates as well as a practice of life-long learning. Our training opportunities are varied, including weekly conference schedules to include didactic, small group, simulation, oral board practice cases, guest lecturers, faculty Grand Rounds, as well as combined conferences with other departments in the institution.

Patient care is the center of our training model. We serve a varied population with a large geographic draw. We are the only Level 1 Trauma Center for the north half of the state, and the only such center north of I-10. We see patients from east Texas and south Arkansas as well. Our patient population consists of underserved populations for whom we gladly and humbly care. In our Emergency Department we care for patients with all stages and types of health issues.

Our faculty have a varied set of interests and experiences. We have dedicated research faculty including both clinical and basic research to serve our residents’ educational needs and interests. We have dedicated ultrasound and simulation faculty who lead these learning opportunities for our department. Our faculty are engaged in teaching in the department during clinical shifts as well as during our reserved conference times.
