North Louisiana's only academic cancer center.

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center began as a designated Center of Excellence in Cancer Research, Treatment and Education in 1993, named following a generous philanthropic gift by Carroll Feist to honor the Feist and Weiller families. Today, FWCC brings cancer research, clinical care, and medical education together as we work toward new and improved models of cancer prevention and treatment.

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is supported by the partnership between Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport and LSU Health Shreveport. Feist-Weiller's research and education initiatives are backed by the academic mission of LSU Health Shreveport while Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport oversees the delivery of clinical care at FWCC. Together, collaboration between cancer researchers and treating physicians fosters a comprehensive understanding of cancer, increased access to treatments, and opportunities for patients to participate in clinical trials.

FWCC has two major roles:

  1. To advance cancer care and reduce the burden of cancer in North Louisiana
  2. To develop research programs, faculty, and facilities that will lead to better and more innovative approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment

Integrate to Accelerate

Among the signature strengths of Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is translational research. In translational cancer research, basic science findings are translated through clinical care into tomorrow's improved therapies. Physicians and scientists take clinical problems from the bedside to the research laboratory where solutions are generated that come back to the bedside. This type of research allows the scientific discoveries to more rapidly become practical applications that can be used in assessment and treatment of cancer patients.

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is focused on the coordinated growth of clinical and research programs aimed at cancer prevention and control. In 2021, we began reorganizing our cancer research programs to strategically address four critical areas of cancer research:

  1. Genetics and Cancer Biology
  2. Viral Oncology and Immunology
  3. Cancer Preventative Control and Health Care Disparities
  4. Developmental: Clinical and Translational Oncology/Cancer Therapeutics
