World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2019
On June 19, 2019, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center celebrated World Sickle Cell Awareness Day with a pizza luncheon. The special guests were Dr. Richard Mansour, Medical Director of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center’s Adult Sickle Cell Program along with Kira Everett, Founder of the Louisiana Adult Sickle Cell Collective. Dr. Mansour’s presentation discussed advances in Sickle Cell Disease treatment while Ms. Everett’s presentation “See the Vision, Share the Vision and Support the Vison!” encouraged participants to create vision books and think about their future.
Since 2008, World Sickle Cell Awareness Day has been held annually, in order to help increase public knowledge and raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and the struggles sufferers and their families go through. The date was chosen to commemorate the day on which a resolution was officially adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, recognizing SCD as a public health concern.
