More than 500 clinical and research faculty members are key to our mission of healing, teaching and discovery. Their dedication enables our students to receive a strong foundation in basic sciences, anatomy and clinical practice. Our faculty includes nationally and internationally known clinicians and researchers. Many have been recruited from major institutions around the country. Others chose to stay on our campus after graduation to teach the next generation of scientists and healthcare providers. Along with the support of our students, faculty members have a strong commitment to the communities in our region and participate in a variety of cultural, academic, athletic, philanthropic and religious activities that enhance the quality of life in the area.

Endowed Chairs and Professorships

The highest honor bestowed on our faculty is an appointment to an endowed chair or professorship. Endowed positions recognize exemplary clinicians, educators and researchers. The funding is managed by the LSUHS Foundation. Some professorships are intended to honor expertise within a broad field of study, whereas others have a more specific focus.

A History of Healing

Our roots date back to 1876, when a Charity Hospital was established in Shreveport. After much perseverance by north Louisiana lawmakers, physicians and community supporters, the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport was officially authorized by the Louisiana Legislature in 1965. On October 1, 2013, after more than 150 years, the hospitals in Shreveport and Monroe transitioned from public to private entities.

Why Choose to Live, Work and Play in Shreveport

Shreveport sits at the intersection of I-20 and I-49, connecting Kansas City and Lafayette, Dallas and Atlanta. We are the third largest city in the State of Louisiana with 200,000 residents and a metropolitan area of nearly half-a-million people. Shreveport Regional Airport is served by five airlines and seven destinations. Caddo Parish has 62 schools, twelve of which have been designated Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. Additionally, we have a higher education system that boasts one of the best private liberal arts colleges in the country, a four-year state university, and a community college.

The Arts are an integral and valued element of our cultural community. The official State Theatre of Louisiana, The Strand, anchors our downtown. It offers off-Broadway shows that appeal to our diverse community. We are proud to host the State’s oldest continually operating professional Symphony as well. Access to numerous free museums, art galleries and historical attractions create a rich quality of life experience. Our downtown riverfront also includes food and shopping, as well as a state of the art aquarium. There is no end to the number of activities for people of all ages, from single to family, festivals to sports to dining.

Shreveport is a city on the rise implementing smartcity initiatives that foster economic growth. We rank 17 out of the top 25 cities with the lowest cost of living and in the Top Ten of Millennial Friendly Cities in the country. Our eyes are fixed on the future. Our city welcomes new industry and is eager to work with existing businesses to help them expand. Shreveport is also a fair share city, ensuring that minority businesses and women-owned companies have a place in our economy. This community is a great place to live and work. Take a video tour of our city, and you will see why more and more people are choosing to invest in Shreveport.
