Mark Knackstedt, MD, PGY5; Marna List, MD, PGY5; and Nrusheel Kattar, MD, PGY4, won the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Academic Bowl at the October conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Resident teams across the country compete against each other for national bragging rights. The format is very similar to Jeopardy, with two rounds of 30 questions, followed by a final question. The LSU Health Shreveport team led the competition from start to finish, never relinquishing the lead even once.
Cardiology fellows Sahith Thotamgari, MD, Divleen Sidhu, MD, and Jake Smith, MD, won first place at the 2025 Louisiana Chapter of American College of Cardiology Fellows in Training Jeopardy Competition October 17. They are now finalists for the national competition.
Cherie-Ann Nathan, MD, FACS, Chair and Professor of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at LSU Health Shreveport, was named a recipient of the LSU Presidential Laurel. The award recognizes exceptional academic, creative and research accomplishments by faculty across LSU’s eight institutions. Honorees are selected by the body of LSU Boyd Professors, the university system’s most distinguished academic rank, based on the
merit and exclusivity of their achievements. Dr. Nathan is one of three professors across the LSU System selected for the honor this year. She is the first faculty member from LSU Health Shreveport to receive this distinction. Colin Laird, MS1; Claire White, MS1; and Zack Karzoun, MS2, were selected as three of only 20 scholars nationwide to receive a Healthy Americas Research Consortium (HARC) grant from the Healthy Americas Foundation. Through this competitive award, each student team receives $10,000 in research support and structured training to use the NIH All of Us Research Workbench, one of the largest and most diverse biomedical data platforms in the world. Over the summer, Laird, White and Karzoun will dive into questions about health access, cardiovascular and brain health, and how social and biological factors intersect to shape outcomes across communities. As HARC scholars, they join a national community of early-career investigators, meeting virtually with other grantees, learning new analytic skills, and engaging with mentors across the country. Their selection reflects both their promise as future physician-scientists and LSU Health Shreveport’s growing role in advancing community-driven, data-informed science that improves health across the Americas.
