Feist-Weiller Cancer Center would like to congratulate Ron Nierman, LPC, and the Sickle Cell Disease support group for being featured in The Voice, a quarterly magazine published by the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. The Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is Shreveport, LA provides a weekly support group for Louisiana State University Health and University Health Sickle Cell (SC) patients. Stared in July of 2010, the purpose of this supportive and expressive group is to provide a place where members can talk aobut their lives with others who truly understand what they are going through.
The group has become a life-changing experience for its members. For many, it is the first time to meet and get to know other SC survivors who range in age from 24 to 78 years old. The group is led by a licensed professional counselor who is also a certified group psychotherapist and an oncology registered nurse. he also serves as the sickle cell coordinator for the adult SC patients at Feist-Weiller.
The SC support group's most popular project is called "The Healing Power of Music." It was founded with the help of Alligator Records, a contemporary blues record label in Chicago and with one its artists, Mavis Staples. Mavis' 2004 album, "Have A Little Faith" became the centerpiece of "The Healing Power of Music" which has since embraced all kinds of music genres including songs that are optimistic, inspirational and empowering. Group members are given CD's to listen to at home, in the car, or in Feist-Weiller's treatment rooms.
The support group also sponsors events for sickle cell awareness month in September and World Sickle Cell Awareness Day in June. The group endeavors to coordinate community programming with the North west Louisiana Chapter of SCDAA an don August 19, 2017 Feist-Weiller will host its first Annual Sickle Cell Conference.
The Sickle Cell Support Group meets every Monday at noon at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center's Bakowski Center for Learning in the first floor lobby.
