Dr. Stephan Witt awarded grant to study dementia and Parkinson's Disease

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) has awarded a 1-year R56 grant of $642,408 to Dr. Stephan Witt and Dr. Joseph Mazzulli. The title of the grant is “Examining the role of phosphatidylethanolamine and autophagic disruption in Lewy body dementias and Parkinson’s disease.” Dr. Witt is the Principal Investigator (PI) at LSUHS, and Dr. Mazzulli is the PI at Northwestern University. The research is based on a finding by the Witt lab that supplemental ethanolamine promotes efficient intracellular trafficking of the Parkinson’s disease-associated protein a-synuclein (Wang et al. PNAS 2014). Drs. Witt and Mazzulli submitted their application under the umbrella of the NIH’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias program. This award is designed to enable the PIs to gather additional data for revision of the current application.
