American Heart Association Announces Dr. Steven Bailey as 2021 Northwest Louisiana Heart Walk Chair

The Heart Walk Digital Experience Brings Communities Together to Fight Heart Disease and Stroke

The American Heart Association (AHA), the largest voluntary health organization fighting heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases, announces Dr. Steven Bailey, MD, MSCAI, MACP,FACC, Chairman of the Department of Medicine and the Malcolm Feist Chair of Interventional Cardiology at LSU Health chair of the 2021Northwest Louisiana (NWLA) Heart Walk. He has been extremely active with the American Heart  Association as an advocate, educator, and fundraiser locally and in San Antonio, Texas prior to his move to Louisiana. 

As chair, Dr. Bailey is leading the organizational and recruitment efforts throughout the Parishes in NWLA.  He is calling on business leaders, survivors, and walkers, to LACE UP and JOIN IN to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke, the leading cause of death in the United States. The NWLA Heart Walk campaign is slated to raise over $120,000 for the Northwest Louisiana American Heart Association. Dr. Bailey has brought together community leaders to help raise funds and awareness,  his Executive Leadership Team consists of: Dinero Washington, CEO SPORTRAN, Joe Littlejohn, New York Life, Paul “Corky” Davis, Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists, Ben Baldwin, McInnis Brothers Construction, Ken Candler, Minden Medical Center, Casey McBeath, Balentine Ambulance, Henry Burns, BOM, Kathy Walker, Willis-Knighton Health System, Dr. Karen Pendleton, owner Pair O’Docs.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States with approximately 11,500 deaths in Louisiana each year from Heart Disease and approximately 2,500 deaths per year from Stroke”, said Bailey, NWLA Heart Walk chair. “With COVID-19 having a much greater impact on those with cardiovascular conditions, it is more important than ever to fund research and the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association. Our collective efforts directly contribute to saving lives”. Louisiana ranks 46th in the country for the highest percentage of deaths from cardiovascular disease

With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic keeping more Americans at home, the NWLA AHA, has embraced the new normal and is planning on holding a hybrid Heart Walk- in person and digital experience combined, following the COVID19 guidelines at the time and the recommendation of the National AHA. The NWLA Heart Walk is a fun and meaningful way to celebrate heart and stroke survivors, raise lifesaving funds and encourage physical activity.

The 2021 Heart Walk Experience will be a blend of weekly Walk-Where-You-Are outings, a step-challenge competition amongst participants, and multiple learning opportunities. The campaign will culminate with an in person and online celebration Saturday morning, May 1, that will feature sponsors, survivors and caregivers, and the results of all fundraising effort. The Heart Walk will begin from Festival Plaza in Shreveport.

The 2021 Spring Heart Walks across the nation are anticipated to be the largest ever as families and co-workers leverage the opportunity to re-connect and get outdoors in safe conditions. Over one- million Americans are expected to take part in a Heart Walk between February-May through digital experiences and some in- person.

Registrants can also use the Heart Walk mobile app and encourage friends and family to join the fun.  Participants will be able to follow along by marking “Going” on the NWLA Heart Walk on the Louisiana AHA Facebook  and can stay up to date with all of the fun leading up to walk day and beyond! On the day of, everyone is encouraged to wear their Heart Walk shirt and post pictures and videos to the Facebook event page to document their activity using #NWLAWalk.
