I am pleased to share that Hugo Cuellar, MD, PhD, MBA, DABR has been named the permanent Chairman of the Department of Radiology effective September 1, 2020. Dr. Cuellar has served in an exemplary manner as the interim chair since October 1, 2019 demonstrating his passion, compassion and intellectual strength as an educator, clinician and researcher. He joined our faculty in 2010 and has made a meaningful contribution to advancing our mission since his arrival.
Dr. Cuellar is an Associate Professor of Radiology, Neurosurgery and Neurology with tenure and serves as Director of Neuroendovascular Surgery and Neuroimaging and Co-Director of the Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center, which is 1 of only 10 American Heart Association Stroke Certified Thrombectomy Centers in the US.
He completed his internship and residency at the University of Neuvo Leon in Mexico followed by fellowships at LSU Health New Orleans and Hospital Nuestra Senora del Rosario in Spain and an observership at John Hopkins Hospital in interventional neuroradiology. His advanced studies include receiving a Master’s in Neuroscience from the University of Madrid, a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Santiago de Compostela Santiago de Compostela, Spain and his MBA with a healthcare concentration from the University of Texas in Dallas. Prior to joining LSUHS, he worked for the Department of Endovascular Therapy at Hospital Nuestra Senora del Rosario in Madrid, Spain.
Dr. Cuellar has presented nationally and internationally at over 100 conferences, educational courses, and clinics, and is a senior member of numerous national and international societies including the Radiological Society of North America, the European Society of Neuroradiology, and the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology. He serves as Web Editor for Ibero Latin American Society of Neuroradiology, and has published 97 papers, 8 book chapters in addition to serving as an investigator on multiple clinical trials.
