LSUHS Participates in annual LSU Day at the Capitol

LSU Health Shreveport participated in the annual LSU Day at the Capitol. LSUHS along with LSU Health New Orleans and Pennington Biomedical Research Center staffed a health fair for members of the legislature and their staff.

Dr. David Barnes, a third year ophthalmology resident, conducted vision screenings with Dr. Suzanne Tinsley and PT students (Tremia Lockett , Sabrina Miller, Kacey Chopin, Alyssa Campbell and Jania Burns) leading an aerobic fitness and lower extremity functional strength assessment along with bone density education and post COVID-19 screening assessment.

Legislative resolutions honoring third year medical student Tunde Abubakar and Dr. Jeremy Kamil, Associate Professor of Microbiology & Immunology were presented in the House and Senate. Tunde was recognized for this innovative efforts to garner more interest from African American students in the fields of medicine and science. Once students declare their interest in medicine and/or science, Tunde pairs them with a mentor. Dr. Kamil was praised for the international recognition he has brought to LSU based on being acclaimed as an expert in viral sequencing. Dr. Kamil has been a strong advocate for the importance of sequencing in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please extend your congratulations to these honorees.
